Alcúdia – The perfect home for beach lovers!

Post image

If you are a beach lover, then Alcúdia (and Port Alcúdia) could be your dream place to live. Alcúdia is located in the North of Mallorca and is known for its massively popular long sandy beaches, powdery pale sand, and extremely shallow and balmy shore waters. The beaches called Playa de Alcúdia and Playa de Muro are the best beaches to discuss, located in the sweeping Alcúdia bay. These beaches are also one of the most popular family beaches in Mallorca!

Alcúdia is only 40 minutes away from the capital Palma by car (where the airport is located). No matter when you arrive near Port Alcúdia you will always find a parking space somewhere. Parallel to the coast, you will find lots of restaurants, bars, and shops. There’s also a massive supermarket nearby, so when you run out of beer, melon Bacardi Breezers or Moët & Chandon for example. the massive supermarket close to the beach will back you up. And not to forget Club de Golf Alcanada has amazing scenery and atmosphere. It is the best golf course in Mallorca!

Alcúdia is one of the main tourist centres of the whole Mallorca. It is located about 5 minutes away from the coast by car. The oldest settlements within Mallorca were built in the land to protect against incoming pirates and invaders. And that’s a reason to go to Alcúdia and experience the historic ambiance. Alcúdia is a contrast to Port Alcúdia where these beautiful beaches are. Because in Alcúdia, there is a historic centre surrounded by a massive city wall waiting for you to be seen. Also, the neo-Gothic Sant Jaume church is built into the town’s restored medieval walls. Inside this historic centre, there are plenty of narrow streets and there’s a lively market. It is great to walk and enjoy this area, as the old town of Alcúdia is very well preserved with buildings coming from the 13th century! Still, you can experience the true spirit of Mallorca as the old town is full of cafes, shops, and terraces.

More reasons why Alcúdia is interesting

In Alcúdia you will find all kinds of nationalities. It’s also a great place to live with a family, as Alcúdia has one of the most child-friendly beaches you will ever see on Mallorca. Over the past few years, there have been a lot of infrastructural advancements. For example, there’s a highway connection that connects Northern Mallorca with the airport and all amenities needed. Compared to more expensive and exclusive villages like Andratx, Alcúdia has relatively more affordable prices. For between 1.000.000 and 2.000.000 euros you could already get your dream house in Alcúdia. For your info: the average house price of hotspots in Mallorca lays around 3.000.000 euros.

What’s interesting is that Alcúdia is split into two areas when it comes to what type of budget suits best. First, we have an area called the ”greasy mile” which is a collection of restaurants and hotels that are catering to budget holidaymakers. Then you also have the harbour area that’s a bit higher in budget. There’s a lot to see and do there in the evening. When you’re interested in nightlife, Alcúdia’s bars and pubs make up the nightlife. Anyway, Alcúdia is such a beautiful place with a historic centre, narrow streets with centuries-old buildings, and mountain areas. Would you ever imagine Alcúdia was founded around the year 70 BC by the Romans?

Alcúdia Beach Highlight

First, let us talk more about the Alcúdia beach and why it’s such a gem and special place to be. You’ve seen two names of beaches before, Playa de Alcúdia and Playa de Muro. Playa de Alcúdia is one of the whitest and widest beaches in Mallorca. Also, it has earned an award: the Blue Flag. What is this? The Blue Flag stands for the excellent water quality, clean facilities, clean beaches, and attention to nature. So, the most beautiful white and widest beach of Mallorca is also very well-maintained. The coastline is about 10 kilometres long and stretches to Playa de Muro. Everywhere on the Alcúdia beach, you will walk on powdery pale sand that’s beautiful light and clean. What’s great too, especially in the peak summer months, is that there’s a constant onshore breeze which helps to cool everything down. Also, around July and August, the sea is gently warmed. So it won’t be hard to let your body adjust to the water temperatures!

Once you passed the gloriously aromatic pine trees and hit the sand, you won’t have to look long to find a patch of sand to pitch your parasols. Soon you will be in the perfect spot for an amazing day of sun and sea in Mallorca. And everywhere you go on the Alcúdia beach, you will find sunbeds and beach bars. The Alcúdia beach is excellent for children too, as the water is very shallow and it gradually gets deeper. The sea also has calm waves, and as this beach is so wide there’s plenty of space for activities like beach volleyball, flying a kite, and building sandcastles. With a supermarket nearby, and good little beach bars like the one on Carrer del Gessamí that serves pretty good grilled fish and meats. The Alcúdia beach is rich in facilities to give you the most comfortable beach experience.

Playa de Muro

Playa de Muro is known to be less busy, but it’s still close to the lively village Alcúdia. It is not a town or a village but just a collection of restaurants and hotels on a small coastal strip. This beach is 6 kilometres long and lays in the bay of Alcúdia. Playa de Muro is not close to nightlife activities and that’s a big reason why it’s less busy there. So if you appreciate good accessibility, peace, quiet, and shallow water, you should visit Playa de Muro! There’s also one beach club on this beach and you will find various restaurants, coffee bars, and facilities for children. From Playa de Muro you can also plan multiple visits like a visit to Cap de Formentor or the market in Alcúdia where we will talk about after this. And if you want to travel even further for another beach experience, you could visit Can Picafort Playa which is a charming coastal town.

Cap de Formentor

Only a drive away from Alcúdia, which takes about 40 minutes, you can visit the lighthouse Cap de Formentor! This lighthouse dates from 1863 and not long ago, in the 1960s, Antonio Paretti built a road to make it possible to drive towards the lighthouse. Many winding roads will lead you up to Cap de Formentor. The road towards it is an experience on its own. You will have great views from the road itself such as beautiful cliffs that steeply drop into the sea. There’s only one road that leads you to Cap de Formentor so don’t be surprised when you meet quite some people there in the peak Summer months. Next to the lighthouse, you will find a bar with a terrace. And the highest point on Cap de Formentor, called Fumart, is located 384 metres above sea level.

You can reach Cap de Formentor both by car and by bicycle. There will be signs there with ‘Formentor’ on them that lead you towards the top. When you’re up for a cycling challenge with steep roads, then this could be a great activity for you. I believe that when you go by bicycle, it would be very satisfying to reach the top. And if you prefer to take it easy, then go by car. Visiting Cap de Formentor is especially a great experience when you can be there at sunset. Then, you will have such romantic and beautiful views! What people admire the most is not the lighthouse itself, but its surroundings. By the way, on your trip to Cap de Formentor, you can take a little stop at Mirador Es Colomer. This is where you will find a monument of Antonio Paretti, who made it possible to travel up there. It’s the first major viewpoint you will encounter. When you climb the stone steps you can get a spectacular view over the huge cliffs and the sea.

Did you know that Formentor is a part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range? This mountain range occupies the entire northwest coast of Mallorca. Cap de Formentor is also called a meeting place because of the strong winds that rule there. And sometimes, when the weather is clear, you should also be able to see the other island Menorca.

Old town Alcúdia

Imagine walking into a city through a large, arched gate out of Roman times! This gate is an effigy of St James. The old town Alcúdia dates from the 13th century and this makes Alcúdia one of the oldest towns of Mallorca. A beautiful building that’s left from this time is the church called San Jaime. You can tell this by the gothic main door, and the bell of this church is the oldest in Mallorca! And would you expect that Pollentia, which is close to Alcúdia,  was one of the most important towns of the Balearics? Yes, it had a unique strategic position in between Alcúdia and Pollenca. Therefore, you will find Roman ruins when you go there.

Close to the massive Roman city wall that surrounds the old town Alcúdia, there’s a market that’s set up twice a week. It will give you a unique atmosphere because of its location. Especially during the Summer months, it could be very busy in this market as a lot of tourists would love to have a historical market experience. In Summer, the market is held from Wednesday to Saturday in the evenings as well. And if you like to go shopping: there is a new shopping area near Port de Alcúdia and a narrow shopping street in the centre of the old town Alcúdia.
