Best beaches in the Netherlands

Post image

Are you looking for the best beaches in the Netherlands? We’ve got your back! Because we sell high-end properties throughout the whole country, we know all the great places and hotspots, including what the best places and beaches are. Maybe you want to live close to one of these (now, or in the future). Minerals from seawater help against infections and many more benefits. Most of all: these places are amazing for your lungs and the calmness of the beach helps with depression, stress, and anxiety too.

A lot of people think it’s healthier to live close to the forests, but this is wrong. The forests attract all the carbon dioxide to themselves. And they currently get more carbon dioxide than they can convert into oxygen. So, yes, forests produce oxygen, but because of the high amounts of carbon dioxide, it’s not the healthiest place to live when it comes to living close to the sea. Something to keep in mind when you’re planning to buy a house, mainly when you appreciate good air, have problems breathing, or have sensitive lungs.

Schiermonnikoog [best beach in the Netherlands]

The beach we have to start with within this article is Schiermonnikoog. The beach of Schiermonnikoog is the broadest of Europa! For example, at some places, it’s 1km wide. Schiermonnikoog is one of the Wadden islands above the Netherlands: the fifth one above Groningen, to be exact. When you go to Schiermonnikoog you will be at one of the most beautiful places in the Netherlands. Good to know is that you can’t bring your car. It’s also a National Park, and with its unspoiled nature and almost no cars, this is a great place for pure relaxation. Furthermore, because the island is surrounded by the sea the air is completely clean! Especially when you walk next to the coast you can get the best salty sea air. So if you’re looking for the best beaches in the Netherlands, Schiermonnikoog is a beach you can’t miss.

Vlieland

Vlieland is another Wadden island in the Netherlands that’s very calm. Just like Schiermonnikoog, it is full of nature. It has beautiful dunes, forests areas, and it hosts a village that’s close to the sea.  Schiermonnikoog has the widest beach in Europe, but the beach in Vlieland is also known to be wide. Therefore, it for sure belongs to the best beaches in the Netherlands. People even go there to go seal spotting. Well, that’s not something you can do on every beach in the Netherlands! Interesting is that there are 40 monuments in the east of Vlieland. The beach has a length of 20 km and there’s also 26 km of cycling roads. So if you’d like something to combine with your beach trip: there you go. If you’re planning to live on one of the islands in the Netherlands, make sure that you can work there too. Because it takes some time before you get to the mainland. Just like Schiermonnikoog, you can’t get here with your car.

Ameland

The last Wadden island in the Netherlands that belongs to the best beaches in the Netherlands, is Ameland. It belongs to the province of Friesland and it’s located 7 km away from the Dutch mainland’s coast. Ameland is known for its compact size which means that you’ll always be close to the coast and sea. It offers the perfect mix of beaches, walking, and cycling. There’s more than 100 km of cycling roads in Ameland which is pretty much compared to the other Wadden islands. It is allowed to get on this island in your car although the village centres of Nes and Hollum are car-free. Nes is an interesting area for younger people as it has two discotheques, lots of restaurants, hotels, shops, and bars. Therefore it’s an interesting place for going out as well.

Scheveningen

As Scheveningen is the most popular seaside town in the Netherlands, we couldn’t exclude this from our list of the best beaches in the Netherlands. Especially during the warmer months of the year, lots of day-trippers and tourists come here to enjoy its long beaches. The place is wonderful for both young and old at any time of the year. For example, what about a romantic walk here during the winter and ending it with a good meal at a restaurant? Scheveningen has a nice and warm atmosphere to be in and there are other attractions nearby the beach, such as the pleasure pier and the sculpture museum. The pleasure pier is both an indoor and outdoor pier with multiple bars, shops, and weekly markets and events. There’s also a cinema close that’s called the Pathé.

Zandvoort aan Zee

As the name says, this city lies at the sea. Zandvoort aan Zee belongs to the best beaches in the Netherlands as it’s a wonderful nature reserve with dune lands, forests, and multiple beaches. This old fishing village has transformed into a modern seaside resort! There are plenty of very good restaurants, terraces, and shops. Zandvoort is also called the ‘Pearl by the sea’ because of its kilometres of clean white and sandy beaches. Interesting to know is that there’s also the Circuit Zandvoort, where you can experience a unique day full of speed and sports cars by the sea. There’s good food and drinks there too. Between 1952 and 1985 this was the location of the Grand Prix Formule 1 of the Netherlands. Max Verstappen is a world-famous race car driver that has done multiple races here. He became the first Netherlands Formule 1-champion on 12 December 2021!

Makkum

Makkum is a historic fishing village in the south of the province Friesland. Due to its association with water this place is highly known for great summer sports during summertime, like surfing, sailing, and waterskiing. All around the village you will find multiple facilities that support this. People even call Makkum a romantic kitesurfing destination and one of the best beaches in the Netherlands. When you’re looking for a huge beach, a pleasant boulevard, and a lively historic village centre, then Makkum is the place to go. Interesting is that you can walk 100 metres into the Ijsselmeer (yes, we’re not talking about the sea here) and the water will be just up to your knees. This makes it an excellent place for children too. But also for the water sport activities, as flat shallow water is perfect for practising and learning your skills.

Hook of Holland

Hook of Holland is known for its wide and open beaches that are especially popular during the summer months. It has great amenities, many watersport facilities and there are several hotels, too. It is one of the best beaches in the Netherlands being the closest to the second largest city of the Netherlands: Rotterdam. We highly recommend visiting Rotterdam, too as it has great architectural and cultural value. Even though it can get crowded here, there’s enough space and privacy for everyone. The biggest part of the crowd is usually concentrated at the same small part of the beach. So if you go a little bit further along the beautiful coastline you will have the best relaxing places.
