Playa de Muro – peaceful and shallow

Post image

On the North coast of Mallorca and in the beautiful bay of Alcúdia, you will find Playa de Muro. It could be the closest area we got to the Maldives in Europe. It’s the main reason why Mallorca is so popular in Europe as you won’t get many places in these colours. Playa de Muro is a white and sandy beach and shows turquoise-coloured waters. When the waves look darker, it is because of the big waves or the amount of seaweed in the water. But auto-wise, the water is light-blue and something you won’t get at other places in Europe! From the airport in Palma, Playa de Muro is approximately 58km away, which takes a 44 minutes drive.

It seems that people outside of Europe, tend to know more about the island Ibiza, for example. They think this island could be a more famous place to go on holiday than Mallorca. However, this is not entirely true. Mallorca is bigger than Ibiza so more people come here. Especially a lot of families. In Mallorca, you will find a lot of rocks, rocky small beaches, or flat coasts when you go to the North of Mallorca. And this is where Playa de Muro is located: a sandy, flat, peaceful, and shallow beach that’s 6km long! Because this beach is so large, it also explains that it is usually much quieter here.

Playa de Muro also earned a blue flag. This flag stands for excellent water quality, clean facilities, clean beaches, and attention to nature. No matter where you are on this beach, you will always be able to find a restaurant and to get a refreshing drink or meal. A lot of large hotels, rental apartments and shops are located around this beach as well, which results in a high amount of tourists during the summer months. The excellent (child-friendly) facilities around Playa de Muro are a huge benefit. And of course, this beach offers sunbeds for its visitors too. Playa de Muro can rightly be called one of the top beaches in Mallorca.

The area around Playa de Muro

If you want to combine your visit to this beautiful beach with other activities or attractions: you could do that as well! There’s a good number of them around Playa de Muro. This also makes it a fabulous location for a family holiday. Close to Playa de Muro, you will find a roundabout with a big fishing hook. Once you see that, you know you’re close to the beach. One way goes straight to the beautiful village Alcúdia and if you go the other way, you will go to Can Picafort.

You will also find a lot of bicycle rent opportunities, mini-golf, and a mini-train that can pick you up anywhere around Playa de Muro (mainly during the holiday season)! And mostly there will be a bar or shop around every corner. When you walk around close to Playa de Muro, you could also find a canal. Be aware that there might be quite some mosquitos here. Especially during hot periods, mosquitos struggle for survival and the water stagnant in these canals is helping mosquitoes to breed.

Now, let’s talk about other things you could do around Playa de Muro.

Can Picafort

A popular seaside resort on Mallorca is a former fishing village where you can still see the old harbour. There will be less tranquillity there compared to Playa de Muro. So if you appreciate that more, then Playa de Muro will probably stay on your favourite beaches. The beach of Can Picafort is 1,5km long and 20 to 30 metres wide! Just like Playa de Muro, it is very child-friendly as the water is shallow and the sea slopes gently. In most places, you could also rent umbrellas and sunbeds. On the south of Can Picafort, the beach merges into the marina.

What makes Can Picafort special, is that it’s a very wide beach (wider than Playa de Muro) and that it has a large boulevard with a lot of terraces. You can say that Playa de Muro has more nature instead. Usually, everywhere around this beach, some lifeguards keep an eye on the swimming people, providing more safety. Once children are done with swimming and building sandcastles, they can jump on the trampolines on the boulevard or get into the merry-go-round. And every Friday, there will be a market that has a wide variety of (Mallorcan) items and products to offer.

Alcúdia

Another way to go from Playa de Muro (or this roundabout with the hook we talked about earlier), is to Alcúdia. Alcúdia also has a massively popular, sandy beach called Playa de Alcúdia. So when you want to experience another delightful beach that’s a lot like Playa de Muro: this is your place to go! Alcúdia is only 6.5km away from Playa de Muro, which takes about 13 minutes by car. Besides, from Playa de Muro, you can decide to walk down to Playa de Alcúdia. A beautiful walk for sure! When you find it too hot in summer, you can also decide to do this walk in winter when the beach could be a little snowy.

Also, you could visit the historic centre with buildings from the 13th century, that’s surrounded by a massive city wall. Furthermore, you can go to the neo-Gothic Sant Jaume church or walk around the narrow streets and lively market. And of course, the old town of Alcúdia is full of shops, cafes, and terraces to buy interesting items or relax. It is a small, lovely historic town that is worth the visit. The nice gate of the city walls, combined with the old buildings and narrow streets gives Alcúdia a historical atmosphere to be in. What will surprise you is that there are exceptionally clean streets.

Hidropark Alcúdia

When you’d like to mix your relaxed time at Playa de Muro with some fun and action, you could have a look at Hidropark Alcúdia. It’s the only water park in the north of Mallorca, with water slides, a 54-hole golf course, floating balls and trampolines, and inflatable castles. You can perfectly combine this with a visit to Playa de Muro and you will have an amazing day. Especially when you have kids, they would love to go on these waterslides. Hidropark Alcúdia is located in a prime area in Port de Alcúdia and close to the town centre. It covers 40.000 square metres with attractions and water rides for people of all ages.

s’Albufera de Mallorca

Would you like to see the largest and most important wetland of the Balearic Islands? This pretty nature park S’Albufera de Mallorca is formed out of an ancient lagoon and the series of dunes separate it from the sea. It’s a great place to enjoy wildlife and go bird watching as this place attracts hundreds of birds. You can find this park on the south of Playa de Muro. The park is extremely well managed and it has good facilities (visitor centre, maps, platforms). You will get some pretty views on higher areas as well. The place is very peaceful, and every day could be different when it comes to the number of birds you will spot. You can also decide to cycle through S’Albufera de Mallorca, by the way.
