Finding new places in Mallorca is always fun, and now we’re going to discover Pollensa and show you some of our amazing properties for sale in the most unique locations. Pollensa is an old city in the North of the island that’s positioned at the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains. This old city was once a simple fishing village but it transformed into an attractive and family-friendly holiday destination. Furthermore, it is a fantastic place to live when you’re looking for your dream house. There are views in Pollensa you would not expect to see. This culturally satisfying yet relaxing city is located more inland, but if you like to experience a great beach you’ll be at Port de Pollensa with 11 minutes by car.

Pollensa is known for its lovely little streets that go up and down and the houses with bright stone facades. When you walk through these streets then suddenly you will be blown away by the view. The impressive square in the centre of the town is full of restaurants, bars, and cafes. Pollensa is rich in history and throughout the town, you will experience these signs. Because Pollensa is so beautiful and inspiring, many writers, artists and musicians started to come to this town. This started to happen in the early 1900s and since then Pollensa has been a major draw for visitors. Interesting things to see are the Roman Bridge called ‘Pont Roma’ and a small mountain with a monastery called Puig de Pollensa. It is located a little bit outside of the town.

From the main square called Placa Mayor, you will find a Parroquial church from the 18th century. It steals the show at one of the best Sunday markets in Mallorca. Enjoy a ‘café con leche’ at the square whilst you watch the world go by. Whether you like impressive, stunning views or arts and crafts you’ll be in paradise. When you walk through the alleys you will discover important sites of the city and lots of artistic traditions. As you try to get on higher grounds in the city you get a glimpse of charming houses and small gardens. Once you managed to climb the stairs you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the Pollensa area.

Port de Pollensa

Port de Pollensa is more than just sun, sand and sea. It has amazing scenery with mountains all around. The long stretches of sandy beaches are highly favoured by the inhabitants and tourists, which are lined by palm trees and pine trees. Of course, you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants and some excellent hotels too. A must-visit is Cap de Formentor, which you can reach in 28 minutes by car from Port de Pollensa. To get there you have to go through many bends and curves, but as you arrive at Cap de Formentor you’ll be calmed down by beautiful sweeping views of the bay.

Besides, did you know that Port de Pollensa is an excellent cycling spot too? It’s one of the main cycling hubs all year round. Port de Pollensa is an excellent base for cyclists who’d like to experience the wide variety of northern routes. It’s also quite easy to rent a bike in Port de Pollensa. And if you’re interested in seeing the underwater world with diving and snorkelling, you could go to Tramuntana Diving & Adventure. The mountains you see are the Tramuntana Mountains – that’s why the diving centre is named after this. The plaza of Port de Pollensa is called Plaza Miquel Capllonch, which is the only square in Port de Pollensa. It’s great to be at one of the restaurants here and if you’d like to see other parts of Mallorca, you can easily take one of the busses that depart here regularly too.

Pollensa old town

The main square in Pollensa we talked about multiple times is the place to come for excellent cafes, restaurants, and people watching too. At all times of the day, this is a pleasant place to come to. Every Sunday there’s a good market hold that offers a wide range of stalls. Close to the square Placa Major you could stumble upon the well-known 365 Calvari Steps. These old steps lead you to the top of Pollensa where you can enjoy the best views. People who’ve gone before you say that climbing these stairs is not too hard, and the stairs go through a pretty part of Pollenca. On top, you will be blown away by everything you see. The sea, the mountains, valleys, hills, typical Mallorcan houses with small alleys and more.

On top of the 365 Calvari Steps, you will also find a small but sweet church with interesting beauty. At midday, you can enjoy the light spilling through the glass stained windows. From the main square, there’s also a hidden treasure called the Museo Dionis Bennassar. What is this? It’s a beautiful home of a famous local artist who used it to showcase his work. You will find several paintings throughout the building and it’s peaceful and inspirational. Would you like to stay a night or more at the heart of Pollensa? Then you could visit the Son Sant Jordi hotel that’s a pretty old townhouse. And just around the corner of this charming hotel, you will find Ca’n Xim which is a delightful bakery on Carrer de la Mar.

The streets of Pollensa reveal interesting small boutiques and shops where you’ll find jewellery, fashions, leather goods and crafts. For example. Paco Mobles is the perfect space when you’d like to find decorative items and furniture for your home. And Teixits Vicents that’s located at Can Berenguer (between Port de Pollensa and Pollensa, you can find it at the crossroads). And are you interested in the fruitiest, most flavour-packed wine selection? Then you could visit Bodegas Ca’n Vidalet. This is a welcoming and modern vineyard to relax and taste Syrah wines, merlot, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and more. You can find this vineyard about 4k away from Pollensa town.

History of Pollensa

Let’s dive into the history of Pollensa and get you to know what the town used to be. To provide the town with water, the inventive Romans built the El Pont Romà which crosses the Torrent de Sant Jordi. So it’s an old Roman bridge. The most ancient marks come from the Talaiots of more than 3000 years ago, and the best-known ones were left by the Romans. It was all peaceful until 440 when the Vandals attacked. The inhabitants had to move inland and under the rule of the Templar Knights, the town prospered and they built an austere church called Nostra Senyora de Angels which is overlooking the square of Pollensa. In the town’s history, you will find signs of the introduction of the Christian world and the Catalan culture.

However, the foundations of Pollensa were laid by the Arabs who improved agriculture and constructed irrigation systems. Since the 14th century, the knights vanished from the island following a conspiracy led by the King of France. The Jesuits arrived after the Templars. They constructed Pollensa’s Church of Monti Sion in 1697. Pollensa had undergone a long time of frequent Pirate attacks. The most famous attack was in 1550: the Moorish Invasion. Funny and interesting to know is that the citizens, led by Joan Mas, won the fight against the army whilst they were only armed with sticks. Every 2nd of August, this event is commemorated with townsfolk dressed as either Moors or Christians.

Cap de Formentor

If you are looking for amazing sea views then you can’t miss the Formentor Lighthouse, also called the Cap de Formentor. It is located in the impressive northern part of Mallorca on the edge of the peninsular. You can get here by car, by bus from Alcúdia or Port de Pollenca, on a tour or by bike. Know that if you go by bike you have to climb quite a lot and go through multiple hairpin bends. You can easily rent a bike in Port de Pollenca. Cap de Formentor has multiple viewpoints, called Mirador Es Colomer, Talaia D’Albercutx, Panorámica hacia Cabo Formentor, and Far de Formentor.

You’ll have many more viewpoints on Cap de Formentor (anywhere you like) but these are known to be good and offer plenty of space for parking. Make sure you have had something to eat as there are not many restaurants at Cap de Formentor. Most of these bars or restaurants are close to Playa de Formentor, the viewpoint of Es Colomer or the lighthouse Far de Formentor. Cap de Formentor has multiple beaches as well like Playa de Formentor (also known as Cala Formentor), Cala Murta and Cala Figuera. Let’s talk about these viewpoints and let you know what’s special about them!

Mirador Es Colomer

Mirador Es Colomer is the biggest viewpoint of Cap de Formentor. From the parking place, you can climb the stone stairs to eventually get a panoramic and spectacular view. The sea, the cliffs, the mountains and the little houses in the distance make it worth it.

Talaia d’Albercutx

Talaia d’Albercutx is located on the opposite side of Mirador Es Colomer. Here you will find a small road that leads to a unique watchtower. This watchtower is located 380 metres above sea level! Therefore, it was a perfect and important place in the past to keep an eye on any incoming attacks of pirates.

Panorámica hacia Cabo Formentor

This viewpoint called Panorámica Hacia Cabo Formentor gives you a beautiful view of the beach called Cala Figuera. This beach is positioned in between green mountains. Combined with the turquoise blue waters it makes a picture-perfect scene.

Far de Formentor

Far de Formentor is located at the end of Cap de Formentor. This is a (simple) lighthouse but you shouldn’t mainly come here for the lighthouse, but the breathtaking views. You can walk around the lighthouse and get amazing views all around you. You can even watch the road with its many hairpin bends and feel relieved you already passed them.

Puig de Pollensa

Next to the old town, you will find an ancient monastery on top of a mountain called Puig de Pollensa, which is 330 metres high. Here you will get amazing views of the bay, the Tramuntana mountains and Cap de Formentor with its historic lighthouse. From Pollensa, it takes a 30-45 walk up to Puig de Pollensa. When you get hungry or thirsty: don’t worry, because on top you can find a café. Here you can enjoy the surroundings and scenery at 360 degrees. We recommend bringing a bottle of water and your best shoes! Also, make sure you wear thin clothes.

Events in Pollensa

Remember I said that every year on the 2nd of August, the Moorish invasion of 1550 is commemorated with townsfolk dressed as either Moors or Christians? Pollensa is the location of this lively battle re-enactment. Furthermore, Pollensa has an annual religious ceremony that attracts many crowds. On Good Friday at Easter, a huge number of tourists come to Pollensa for an atmospheric religious event. It takes place on the Via Crucis, the 365 Calvari Steps that lead up to Calvary hill. The festival is called the ‘Devallament’ in which actors sensitively depict the suffering of Christ.

Would you like to experience award-winning wines at Mallorca’s largest wine fair, Fira del Vi? This event usually takes place two weeks after Easter. The wine fair is held within the cloisters and shows you the inviting and cool interior. Something else that’s interesting for wine lovers is the Mortitx winery. This is an upcoming contender in the Balearic wines. They have exciting creations such as a great modern rosé, and Mortitx Dolç de Gel which is the only ice wine made on the island. The Mortitx winery lays in a great location that shows spectacular panoramic views of both the sea and the Tramuntana mountains.

Pollensa also has a music festival called ‘Pollensa Music Festival’. In the centre of the town, the Santo Domingo Cloisters are the venue for open-air concerts. You can look at Pollensa as being Mallorca’s cultural capital. There are art exhibitions, concerts, and film showings which you can find in the streets and close to the town hall.

Conclusion

With lots of luxury villas in Pollensa, including a pool and fantastic surroundings you have a very high chance of finding your dream home. Our properties in Pollensa offer complete privacy and maximum comfort. You can buy a property that’s located in a high area in Pollensa to have spectacular sea views, or live closer to the town surrounded by beautiful gardens with typical Mediterranean plants and flowers. Whatever you choose, all our modern villas in Pollensa are made of excellent materials and can fulfil all your needs.

Pollensa is a beautiful historic town located on the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains. The inhabitants are friendly and the village is charming with its picturesque alleys and bright stone facades. When you’re in town you must once take the 365 Calvari Steps to be completely blown away by the view. It’s a highly desirable place to live with a solid, established infrastructure. Pollensa is easy to access to the main MA21 motorway but it’s still surrounded by natural unspoilt beauty. The northern part of Mallorca is known for its cooler temperatures so this can be a good thing if you like that.
