Valldemossa

How does it sound like to live in a village in the mountains? With beautiful stunning views across the valley that looks like a multi-layered skirt because of the terraced lands that descend? Then we talk about Valldemossa, an impressive village in the west of Mallorca. It is a charming, romantic, and beautiful mountainous village that is located in a green valley. It deserves to be called one of the prettiest mountain villages of Mallorca. Many famous people have gone before you to experience it. It’s not difficult to believe that they got a lot of their inspiration from this place to write a novel (George Sand) or compose music (Frederic Chopin). Yes, these people have lived in this village!

Talking about brand awareness, you can tell Valldemossa got a strong brand image due to this writer and famous Polish composer. And this is also noticeable once you walk into the famous monastery. You can see this monastery from a distance, surrounded by the green and hilly landscape. It is located in the centre of the authentic Valldemossa and it has been around since the 14th century. Close to the entrance of this monastery, you will find a statue of Chopin. The monastery is rich in history and you will find old letters, descriptions of medicines, and an art collection.

In Port de Valldemossa, you can visit a charming fishermen’s harbour that’s located about 20 minutes away by car from Valldemossa. Once you are there you could imagine why it’s called a fishermen’s paradise. The road to get there could be a challenge: kilometres of hairpin bends and zigzagging, but once you’re there you will get rewarded. And if you love to see a waterfall, you can have a look at Rei de Teules, a waterfall that you can see during the rainy seasons.

Valldemossa is one of the more expensive villages

Prices for properties in Valldemossa are relatively higher compared to other villages, and this is not surprising because of its location in the mountains with impressive landscapes and terraces. The famous monastery is also a big part of the historical feel of Valldemossa. In the centre of the village, you will find little cobbled lanes and alleyways, and gardens of King Juan Carlos I. And even though you live in the mountains, you can still easily travel to the beach which is about 1,5 km away. And 20 minutes away from Valldemossa you can reach Palma, the capital of Mallorca. Other nearby villages on the west part of Mallorca villages are Deià, Sóller or Fornalutx (which are all worth a visit).

Valldemossa has exclusively houses for sale (no apartments) for prices between 1.000.000 and 10.000.000. And believe it or not, there are more exclusive homes for 24.000.000 but also a couple of houses that go for 500.000. You can tell there is a huge price range. It all depends on where you live (in the centre) and what the view is like.

He bought an estate called S’Estaca that lies on the west coast in between Valldemossa and Deía. This massive estate was once on the market for 35.000.000.

Valldemossa is a paradise shining on Mallorca. And one of the amazing properties that we can offer you in the Valldemossa countryside, generates a moment of astonishing silence once you get there. Port de Valldemossa

Port de Valldemossa is worth mentioning as it is such a place to be on postcards. This beautiful fishing hamlet is located 7.5 km away from Valldemossa, and you’ll get there within 20 minutes by car. Be prepared for a narrow road with steep slopes and hairpin bends. Once you get on this road there is no turning back. However, when you stay calm and get past this, you will be rewarded with a lovely place to enjoy your life. The road towards it is an experience on its own and already offers you breathtaking views from the car.

Port de Valldemossa does not have any stores, as it is a very tiny village. But it has an excellent restaurant called Es Port which we highly recommend visiting. It serves good drinks, food, and ice cream. When you’re the driver, make sure you don’t get lost in Mallorca’s wine too much, as you need to stay sober during the ride back. Remember all these hairpins we talked about? And if you want to park the car and take a swim, it’s recommended to go there early. Port de Valldemossa has a pebbled beach, so when you take a sun lounger and maybe a parasol with you it will be easy to spend your day here!

Valldemossa Chopin

Remember the monastery we talked about? For 400 years, this Chartusian Monastery of Valldemossa was inhabited by monks to find peace and rest. Well, within this charterhouse, Frederic Chopin composed the works and his fame between the walls of his cell. Chopin has ailing with old tuberculosis, and the mild climate of Mallorca would therefore be an excellent choice to ease his discomfort. However, when Chopin arrived, it seemed like a disappointing winter because his piano didn’t arrive. But once it did he wrote some of his finest pieces like Scherzo No. 3, Ballade no. 2 and Scherzo no. 3. Chopin is a big reason why Valldemossa is such a famous place. The famous composer made an excellent choice to choose for one of the most beautiful villages in Europe!

Valldemossa restaurants

There are plenty of delicious restaurants to find when you move around the medieval Valldemossa. These could be close to the sea or have stunning views of the mountains and across the valleys. We will now mention a few restaurants in Valldemossa that we recommend to you.

Es Taller Valldemossa

A delightful restaurant with rustic décor, outdoor seating in warmer months, and a great tapas selection is Es Taller Valldemossa. Their dishes won’t let you down as they are healthy, tasty, and beautifully presented. You can go there for a fresh lunch or dinner in a relaxed atmosphere where the friendly staff has a lot of attention to detail. When you sit outside, you will have a beautiful view of the mountains. So, looking for great food in Valldemossa? Es Taller is an amazing restaurant with creative, good products and great value for money. This restaurant could also be a refreshing experience for you as it doesn’t deliver the typical dishes as most restaurants in Mallorca deliver.

QuitaPenas Valldemossa

If you are looking for a simple, tasty and beautifully presented restaurant, you can have a visit at QuitaPenas Valldemossa. It is a very cosy place in an old bodega, with good products and service. The house where the restaurant is in may have stayed in one family for centuries! And if you like you could go on the upstairs terrace which has a lovely view of the town and the mountains, especially at sunset. Don’t expect anything special or a wide variety of food, as it they deserve simple local foods. However, they are very delicious because they use the best local ingredients and combine them in such a way you’ll get the best experience.  When you go to QuitaPenas Valldemossa, you won’t be disappointed.

Restaurante Es Port

Remember Es Port? This is an excellent restaurant located in the tiny village called Port de Valldemossa. This restaurant is next to the sea, meaning you will have a brilliant sea view whilst dining there! Also, you could go there for a refreshing drink, lunch, or ice cream. Restaurante Es Port offers excellent grilled fish and stunning seafood. And let’s be honest, what is a better place to eat seafood than combined with the sound and smell of the sea? Exactly. It is for sure worth the crazy narrow road with many hairpins to get there. This road down the mountain is about 7.5km long. Be aware of the random sea sprays, they are refreshing if you get caught!

Hotel Valldemossa

Hotel Valldemossa & restaurant is absolutely worth mentioning, as it is such a spectacular and charming boutique hotel on a hill. You could go there on holiday, stay there for a weekend, or take something to eat. Whether you are a guest of the hotel or not, you can always go there to enjoy the lovingly made exquisite Mediterranean cuisine. Everything in the restaurant of hotel Valldemossa is made of their own local produce. You will have spectacular views of the Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa as well as the bay of Palma. It is known to be one of the most beautiful villages of Europa, and even Chopin described it as ‘’the most beautiful place in the world’’. Well, doesn’t that say something?

Path of the Archduke

I think you wouldn’t be surprised when I say that Valldemossa is a great place for hiking. As you know, Valldemossa has a lot of hills in a beautiful green valley, lands that descend, and stunning views – everywhere you go. You can tell these views compensate for all the work you have to do to get up these steep hill trails. The Path of the Archduke is known to be one of the best hiking trails in Mallorca! When you or one of your fellow travellers have problems with the heart, or difficulty walking, it will be a huge challenge to do this hiking trail.  In any case, I recommend you not to rush it as there are some steep sections. Make sure you dress appropriately as it could be cool and windy on top.

Also, pay attention to the cairns as the trail is not very well marked. It could come in handy if you bring a GPS tracker with you as well. And are you afraid of heights? Then you will be challenged when you walk on the sections with long drop-offs. The Path of the Archduke will be an experience you’ll never forget. Just imagine walking along the cliffs where the Tramuntana mountains drop into the ocean. The hiking route is quite diverse as well. From walking on the heights to ambling along the edge you ascend you can amble along the edge next to the blue ocean. So, planning to go to Valldemossa or to live there? Get on your walking shoes and take this amazing challenge!

Frederic Chopin & George Sand Museum

Do you want to know where the great man Frederic Chopin has lived and worked? Together with the extraordinary woman George Sand? During their trip to Mallorca in 1838 and 1839, they have occupied the same rooms as there are in this museum right now. It could be such an inspiring experience to be in the same rooms where Chopin composed his finest pieces. And if you’re not familiar with George Sand, she wrote a travel novel called ‘A Winter in Majorca’. This novel is about her time in Mallorca which was not appreciated by the locals whom she insulted. This museum evokes a sense of this period in history to be in and around this place. Also, if you’d like to be physically where Chopin and Sand where this museum is a must-visit. There’s also a garden that gives you spectacular panoramic views with rose gardens and vineyards below.
